Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) on Tuesday feigned a shocked reaction when asked about Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) announcement that he would direct House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

“Oh my god, really?” Fetterman said, raising his hands to the side of his head, when asked by an NBC journalist about the McCarthy news.

“Oh my gosh, you know, oh, it’s devastating,” Fetterman continued, before laughing audibly.

“Ooo, don’t do it. Please don’t do it! Oh, no! Oh, no,” he added, before walking off.

McCarthy keeps picking the decisions that placate the far right at the cost of their national prospects. A plurality believed that Republicans are to blame for the debt ceiling crisis earlier this year, when they were polled after the fact.

If Republicans don’t pass a bipartisan budget from the Senate in the House because they’re too busy trying to impeach Biden with no evidence, and the government shuts down… well. It won’t be on all Republicans because of the Senate Bill, but it will all fall on McCarthy’s head. He can’t blame anyone else for House Republicans taking the beating, and having their prospects worsen in 2024 because of it.

And the icing on the cake, they might not even have unanimity within their caucus. Can you imagine if the impeachment moves forward to a vote because the far right keeps pushing for it, and the vote fails because vulnerable Republicans don’t want to throw their seats away?

I should stock up on some popcorn.
