I appreciate the reply. Having ahot APS-C for a little over 10 years before my current FF body I would chalk most of the FF look up to a combination of shallow depth of field and maybe some more vignetting when wide open. Then again, I never owned a fast lens in my APS-C days because I was shooting different things.

What you said about the Sony IBIS unit had me a little wary. One of the things I don’t like about my a7III is that the IBIS unit flops around while I’m walking around and I do quite a bit of walking while carrying it.

I’m interested to hear you say you don’t see much advantage in the higher resolution sensor. I would think the extra pixels would let you crop more aggressively.

Yep, that’s exactly what my A7S suffered from and the repair cost wasn’t worth it, with no guarantees to not break again. I am not sure if that’s changed in recent times.

For the high res sensor part, let me correct myself. I would say the photos weren’t materially different just because of the resolution. I am sure there are a few moments where cropping isn’t as horrendous 26 MP -> 14MP before where as now I’m at 40 MP -> 23MP. On a photo by photo comparison the photos are pretty close.

Evidently on Sony FF the IBIS unit is intended to not be locked in place, but I am a bit wary of wear and tear from it flopping around. I’ve had the body for less than a year and so far so good, but less than a year isn’t very long…

Happy to hear your report on resolution not being a huge deal. I’ve been waffling about a 2x MP sensor (say… like an X-H2s). I guess I’ve been shooting that resolution for a while and haven’t ever had any image quality complaints.
