From the looks of it, legendary development studio id Software is working on a new version of its proprietary game engine - id Tech 8.

The Texas-based studio is responsible for some of the most popular shooter franchises in the gaming industry, including the Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake series and a new version of the studio’s game engine appears to be on its way. At least, according to a resume from an engine programmer at the studio. On Linkedin, the programmer, who has been working at id Software since 2019, briefly mentioned “id Tech 8” in the about section. This reference has been edited and now only reads “id Tech”. Luckily, gaming industry job spotter ‘Timur222’ screenshotted the reference, although this tweet has also since been deleted.

Yea I have a hard time articulating why, but I preferred 2016 to Eternal.
Also, I think Mick Gordon and id Software aren’t likely to work together anymore, which to me is kinda the nail in the coffin of these reboots.
I don’t think Doom can be Doom without its music composer.

Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Doom 64 and Doom 3 would all like a word with you.

Maybe they should pony up for another Trent Reznor score.

You jest but I would love a moden Quake reboot with a squelchy, organic NiN soundtrack

For me, I think it’s the fact that Doom Eternal is moreso the thinking man’s Doom game, but I personally don’t play Doom to think.

I play Doom so I can bust into a room, shove my shotgun against an Imp’s face, say “does this smell like gunpowder to you?”, and blow their brains across five states.

Both games are great, but I think where 2016 shines is that raw immersion of rage and rampage.
