Makes illegally immigrating much easier when you don’t have to attempt a water landing. Theres also how screwed up most of central America is compared to the US.

Well, theres probably multiple reasons for that.
The first reason that comes to mind is theres a land connection. Makes illegally immigrating much easier when you don’t have to attempt a water landing.
