The Linux hatred for GUI’s and the detestation of anyone who doesn’t know how to use a terminal is akin to the boomer’s shouting at the younger generation for not pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.
“Back in my day we had to know the internal workings of our computers! We had to compile our own kernels and we liked it that way!”
Yeah and you also were privleged to be able to own a damn computer and have the time and knowledge to learn how to use it. For all its many flaws and for all the bullshit Microsoft has done over the years they’re part of the reason nearly every home had a computer in it. It wasn’t just about making the hardware affordable, it was making the machine accessible and a big part of that is making it easier to use.
The world is moving on from that era, more and more people are using Android and iOS as their primary, sometimes only, computing device and perfectly happy that way. Meanwhile, troglodytes are still sat here beating the dead horse that is the desktop wars. Microsoft won and it’s now too late to win that war. Let it go and let people be happy.
Whilst I don’t disagree with you entirely, let me tell you: Microsoft is a shitshow. Anyone who thinks otherwise is institutionalised.
I had the privilege of not having to use Windows at all for years. My new job handed me a Win PC. It. Fucking. Sucks.
I’m a software designer by trade. I’d tell you the myriad ways it sucks but I just can’t be arsed unless I could invoice someone for it.
Don’t think I’m an ‘any other OS’ fanboi either. They all suck in their own particular ways, but MS is in it’s own, nefarious, egregious, absolutely fucking maddening category.
I don’t disagree with you either, please don’t take my comment as an endorsement of Windows, just an acceptance that it’s the dominant OS for a reason, even if that reason is full of issues in itself.
I don’t mind Windows, but it’s downright archaic and never getting any better.
Apologies if it came across as an attack. Rereading the thread I can see it may have. Rest assured what you see is my frustration at having to use Windows to work!
GUIs do come with the very real downside of taking automation from almost trivial to almost impossible. While I certainly won’t sit here and argue for a return to the cli-only days, I think obfuscation of important functionality buried in gui-only tools is a net loss for society. Everything should be built as a library with both cli and gui wrappers.

Not at all! It has been a perfectly civil discussion as far as I’m concerned 🙂
