I don’t think the Chinese government Tencent is looking to profit from Reddit monetarily.
What I think is happening, and I may be completely off the mark here, is that Tencent’s share is for propping up a means for which China can propagate and legitimize their propaganda. /r/Sino and /r/GenZedong are in Reddit afterall.
In a weird twist, I think if Tencent had more control, we might see a more user-friendly Reddit, while at the same time, shadowbanning any voice that’s critical of China.
