Snipe is still insane in TvZ. Ghosts counter spellcasters that don’t really have a counter to ghosts, and then they also counter every other unit, especially the lategame ones. Once you get to the lategame, there’s never a reason to not mass ghosts. The game says that roaches are the counter to ghosts, but has anyone ever made a roach after the 9 minute mark?
Ghosts are weak against hordes of units. I’d say that roaches are probably the best thing to make against them, since they’re cheap, can generally survive more than one snipe and Ghosts don’t even have an autoattack damage increase against them.
So you think roaches should be made in the lategame and will survive against the everything else?
Ghosts exist specifically to counter spellcasters and large biological units. Roaches are going to last a lot longer against mass snipe spam or EMP’s than Ultralisks, Brood Lords, Infestors or Vipers.
In my eyes, the problem is that they counter everything. I remember when infested terrans were removed from infestors because “players should not be able to always mass one unit and have it be good in every situation”, I think this is the situation we’re in with ghosts. Remember that I’m talking about the lategame, I’ll agree that roaches are a good counter to ghost openings, but there’s a reason why nobody tech switches to roaches in the lategame: they’re bad units.
Zerg spellcasters don’t really counter ghosts. Fungal interrupts snipe, but still does very little damage and doesn’t burn the ghost’s energy; it’s free to try sniping again when it wears off. Emp is an instant ability so it’s much easier to EMP infestors and vipers. I think EMP can actually be cast during an abduct if I’m not mistaken. Neuralling a ghost can really only be done sneakily, and then the infestor is just a scan away from death.
