Amazon coupons: what's the story?

Every third product I search for has a check box coupon. Is there any downside to accepting those offers? Why not just list the item at the cheaper price?

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.
