I’m wondering if there are any good foss apps for connecting to a garmin bike computer (520) to transfer GPX files?

I used to use Komoot to generate my routes, and then their garmin app would download them from my account. This isn’t very foss, so I was looking for some better tools to make this work.

I was planning to use OsmAnd to create the route file, but then after that I would have to use Garmin Connect to transfer the file. (and with storage sandboxing, that would be very fiddly)

Any tips?

I think what you’ve suggested is the most straightforward way to get the GPX files from your phone to the Garmin

You could use a file manager instead (if Garmin devices still show up as a removable disk when connected via USB) but that’s just as fiddly - however it may be possible to automate the transfer using some kind of storage sync app.

As a side note - I was considering getting a Garmin to replace my older bike computer (which got stolen sadly) but the unit cost and need to convert OSM cycle maps put me off, ended up settling on planning routes and recording rides in OsmAnd

Yea I think what I’ll do now is just forego the bike computer, and use osmand. It has pretty good routing support, and very customisable. really impressed with it. Bike computers are part of the bad side of cycling I would like to leave behind anyway.

I thought I wa going to get a garmin computer, and was worried about using it with only Linux devices to hand, but my fairphone 4 and a good portable charger/power pack can keep me on the road for a week running OSMAnd~. A tip: load your GPX files as tracks instead of using the navigation, just follow the red line, it saves a fraction of battery! 😁

Nice one! Do you have some sort of mount for your phone?

Would like to chime in with Organic Maps. Also OSM based, but lighter and faster than OSMAnd, also on FDroid.
