I do not follow Formula 1, I just stumbled across this post browsing the main page. Why does the person in 1st have twice as many points as the next runner up? Is this a quirk of how Formula 1 scoring is done or did they actually just win by that much?

1st gets 25 points, second gets 18 per race. He consistently won nearly every race this season whereas second place was less consistent.

As others have said, Max has just been dominant this year and his teammate Checo has done well but been wildly inconsistent.

Guy in third is Lewis Hamilton (7 time world champion) who started the season with a terrible car that the team has upgraded throughout the year to be an ok car so he’s fought his way to third.

A big talking point in the sport right now is if Checo (2nd place) keeps his job next year based on his inconsistent performance, rumor is that he’s out if he doesn’t at least keep second place by end of this year.

2 races left, Las Vegas in a couple weeks on the 19th midnight central standard time, and then Abu Dhabi on the 26th 7am central standard time. Qualifying for both is on the Saturday before, all of it is aired on espn if you’re American.
