    There’s a variation of Pop Goes the Weasel:

    “All around the cobbler’s bench The monkey chased the weasel; The monkey thought 'twas all in fun, Pop! Goes the weasel.”

    So the monkey is the victim of the popping by the weasel for being chased. I’m not sure if there’s a deeper meaning to the mulberry bush though.

      The version I heard growing up in Western New York was:

      All around the mulberry bush,

      The monkey chased the weasel.

      The monkey stopped to pull up his socks.

      Pop! Goes the weasel.

      Mulberry bush fits in place of cobbler’s bench if you say it like mulb’ry. I’ll bet it’s a variation on the variation.
