So for anyone considering laser cutting, (a) it smells a lot and (b) it can catch fire, both of which can be a problem in residential dwellings.

    Not me (yet) - I just did enough research to find https://www.youtube.com/@justinlaser/videos recommendations and advice before buying anything.
