FAQs

Q: Are we allowed to post here?

A: Yes, unlike Reddit where posting has always been off to keep the chances of the sub surviving as high as possible, here you may discuss & post freely as long as you follow our rules.

Q: I’m new, where do I find the FMHY wiki?

A: You can access the wiki via our website or from one of the mirrors in backups.

Q: Are the sites here safe to use?

A: Yes, we always scan files and research sites to ensure their safety before adding them. We also listen to the community, so if there’s something you feel needs to be addressed, you’re more than welcome to contact us. You can also find all the sites/software we’ve listed as unsafe here.

Q: What is Divolt?

A: You can read about it here.

Q: How can I contact you?

A: The best way to contact us is to join us on Divolt, where you can submit links, get help, or suggest changes to the wiki. You may also DM a community moderator or instance admin.

Q: How do I search the FMHY wiki?

A: You can find all the ways to search the wiki here.

Q: Can I edit FMHY?

A: Absolutely. This project was made by and belongs to the community, so we allow anyone to suggest changes via pull requests. We want this project to be as organized and useful as possible, so if you feel like you can help improve it, please do.

Q: Can I get an offline copy of the wiki?

A: The raw markdown files can all be downloaded from the backups page. The formatting should work on any sites or apps that support markdown.

Q: How do I view encoded links?

A: You can use any base64 decoding site or extension.

Q: Can I donate?

A: We appreciate that people want to support us by donating, but the reason we maintain this project is because it’s fun and it’s our desire to help others, not to make money. We never have and never will accept donations.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and we’ll do our best to answer as soon as possible.

Do the mods of this instance have any consensus on defederation from other instances?

For example if they violate one of the instances rules such as

    1. No racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, spam.

Yes, if an instance has a history of being problematic and its users causing issues on other instances we will defed. We’re trying to keep defederation minimal & letting our users curate the content they see.

Makes sense it is a bit of a nuclear option after all. I’ve seen the occasional post while browsing by all about sh.it just.works and their issue with exploding-heads and it made me curious so I figured I’d ask

You’re correct problematic can be/is subjective, generally the meaning here is an instance that causes issues on our instance or across the fediverse and/or their users violate our rules constantly.

Doubt the mod would do any ‘defedding’ without asking the community first. It is way easier on Lemmy to ask the community as it’s proportionally smaller.

Your concerns are valid: I understand your point of view - and all you have to do if you disagree with an instance, is to simply migrate to another instance. That’s the beauty of federated/decentralized platforms!
