I want to know what they think. I want to see how they view what the Republicans and Democrats are doing. I can easily say what I think they are doing and how they are not the same, so I want to know what makes them think they are the same.

When you say that you want to ask these questions just to find out what ‘the other side’ thinks, you are treating the conversation as if the other person is a member of ‘the other side’ and can speak for their viewpoints. There can be people who disagree with you that aren’t far-right religious extremists.
