I absolutely love that Barbie, a movie which, at first glance, would seem to live as far as possible from Fantasy or Science Fiction land, turns out to actually be a science fiction movie.
…but it ain’t because they go to space, as the article reasons.
Barbie is a science fiction movie because it’s speculative. What if you were actually a doll living in a world dreamt up by a kid? What if, one day, you woke up and realised there was a bigger world outside?
That’s why Barbie is a sci-fi movie, not because they go to space.
