NASA’s 46-year-old Voyager 1 spacecraft has experienced a computer glitch that prevents it from returning science data to Earth from the solar system’s outer reaches.
The headline is misleading.
Voyager 1 hasn’t gone dark, it is still sending data to earth and still responding to commands they are sending it. The except instead of sending telemetry data, it’s just sending the same pattern of garbage data over and over again, like a broken record.
If they can figure out what’s gone wrong there’s a chance they can send commands to fix it. It takes over a day now for commands to reach voyager and almost two before they get a response so patience is required.
If this is the end, 46 years is a truly impressive achievement for the voyager team. They should be extremely proud of their accomplishment.
