This appears to me to be more about keeping accurate health data measuring in the hospital and not on your wrist… Just my two cents based on a cursory look at what masimo is selling. Follow the money on that and it doesn’t take you to a competing smartwatch, it takes you to products you find used in hospitals.

Not so sure about that. I wouldn’t rule that out, but, garmin also has a pretty decent oxygen sensor on their latest watches and I have seen nothing about them being sued, etc. This does look like it’s purely a patent issue. I don’t think we should have patents on tech that helps us live longer, healthier, etc but that’s a whole other discussion that I’m not in the mood for at the moment.

That sums up the entirety of my concern actually :). Don’t care about apple watches one bit, but I’d absolutely love to be able to buy my wife a watch that’ll monitor her blood sugar in real time. From what I understand, it’s close to existing, but is being stalled by governments (not just US either) due to concerns about accuracy (preventing dangerous spikes and lows doesn’t require medical grade accuracy…).

I’m also not that invested in defending this corporation from that one. Let them figure it out, hopefully the outcome is nicer for consumers

We also know that apple has a history of patent infringement and straight up stealing designs and tech from others. Whether this is blatant infringement or just apple somehow creating tech that is close enough to an existing patent, who knows. My bet though is on it being actual infringement.
