The south wanted to force the north to revoke freed peoples citizenship and send them back to their owners, and they were even sending bands of bounty hunters into northern states to collect black people, many of whom were never born as slaves.
So the south were the ones infringing on states rights more than anything.
When someone makes the argument that it was states rights that did it, just follow up with the question “…to do what?”
Because the answer is “have slaves”.
