Former President Rodrigo Duterte has warned that the Philippines would not escape the wrath of China once tensions with the United States rise amid the expanded American military presence in the country.
During a show on SMNI news earlier this week, Dutert said he “regularly” meets with Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian to maintain an open discussion and relay that the Philippines “does not have a quarrel with China.”
However, he noted that the Chinese envoy stressed that if the national government “provides places where there can be an aggressive action to China, the Philippines would always be a target.”
Duterte then questioned the Marcos’ administration’s decision to grant the US government more military bases.
“If we are fighting a war and destroying the allies nearby, ang Pilipinas ay tatamaan talaga (the Philippines will surely be hit) because of the presence of military forces of the US," he said. “What is really sad is the Philippines granting military bases for the US.”
He also noted that thinking that the US would not bring nuclear weapons would be “too pretty naive or stupidity.”
“I said by granting America several bases, we can be sure, and I am sure as the sun will rise in the east, that these nuclear bases… will have nuclear warheads,” Duterte said.
Look at how that went for Cuba and then we’ll talk. Beasides their first target will be Taiwan so I guess you won’t even be caught on surprise.
Curious are we talking about the sanction or the crisis that happen that time? If for the crisis to happen is we do it in secret. I think best approach for PH if were to house nuclear weapons is to announce it. Thats the real power of it anyway political power. As for sanction that won’t happen reason is our ally is USA. But you have a point that could happen if USA stops liking us but with the current situation I doubt it. Yes, Taiwan will be first then us, it just make sense. WW2 had something similar happen during that time Japan wanted Indonesia they saw PH might as well take it. Us having Nuclear makes China think twice. Its the reason why despot wanted to have one why NK still exist aside from China’s support.
Or it makes you a first strike location, beasides joining the MAD club isn’t fun. It just ensures that when nukes go up you are one of the targets.
Ok we’ll all die either way, but in a convencional war PH has a chance as we seen in Ukrain, with the USA’s weapons and tech, a small country can hold.
