I’m still figuring things out. My account is on lemmy.world, and I noticed that when I browse /all, I see a lot of posts in communities that are on lemmynsfw, but if I go to lemmynsfw.com directly, most of those communities don’t show. In fact, going directly, most of the posts on lemmynsfw actually look SFW - they’re on c/celebs and communities for specific people. Can anyone explain it for me?
You’re not logged in when you browse through lemmynsfw. NSFW-flagged content may not show when you aren’t logged in.
Oh, interesting, I had no idea that was a thing. And there’s no way to login with my lemmy.world account when I go directly, right? And it’s a server side setting, not on my end?
Yes, AFAIK there’s no way to log in on one instance using credentials from another instance. And also yes, it is a server-side setting (again, as far as I know).
Honestly though, making a separate account on lemmynsfw isn’t the worst idea. That’s what I did to keep my NSFW browsing and normal Lemmying separate.
I get it, and understand why a lot of people would do that. I’m an older guy. I’m not worried about my wife seeing me looking at NSFW content, and we’re the only ones at home. I just don’t care. The NSFW stuff isn’t my primary driver, but I don’t filter it out either. I was mostly curious why it would be sanitized when being on the instance directly, and you explanation makes perfect sense.
One other question you may or may not know the answer to. I know I can go to a specific community, like I can go to https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected] and see all of that community while logged into lemmy.world, but is there a way to see all the communities on another instance while logged into lemmy.world?
Well, searching for an instance in Lemmy Explorer works. And if you click on the house icon up in the right corner, you can set your home instance, this will change all links in the search to open in your home instance.
I had no idea that’s what the house icon did. I thought it just refreshed the home page. Thanks!
That I don’t know. There’s external search tools but they don’t work that great.
