Duh. It’s because the president is immune from all crimes.

It’s sad that this is actually really close to the truth. The one consistent message the authoritarians make is that if you hold the leader accountable then anyone could be targeted by the law. And they don’t see how by inferring that, they are admitting to being guilty of shit.

They’re both admitting their guilt, but also telegraphing their intention.

“If you allow this to happen to our leader, then we know you will let it happen to us, and thus we will attack you the same way before you have a chance.”

It’s a threat as much as an admission, and it’s also the reason they can’t be trusted with anything. Regressives are deeply uncreative, but once they’ve seen a thing in action, and if it’s something they think will happen to them, it becomes their fixation.

The thing is, making a barrier to keep some random bozo from making frivolous lawsuits makes a bit of sense, but of course anything that exists will get stretched and twisted into something completely different like blanket immunity. Or in this case blanket immunity in office trying to be twisted into immunity for life or a blatant get out of jail free card for anyone who was ever president, which is complete horseshit.

Hell, the whole immunity thing is from a policy, not written law.
