I am happy with their actions but highly skeptical of their motivations.

It is probably a politically popular move in South Africa and especially considering the many problems South Africa is facing I understand your skepticism. However, it also makes historical sense SA does this.

Israel was one of the very few countries that continued its relationship with South Africa during apartheid. Israel would buy raw materials and South Africa weapons as well as technologies like nuclear. It’s the reason why South Africa actually had nuclear weapons for a while and still have nuclear energy (pretty sure still the only African country). Israel also helped them make petrol for vehicles out of coal, which sounds insane but was a way to seal with the sanctions against South Africa that prevented them from importing oil. The apartheid regime undoubtedly lasted longer because of Israel, and South Africans haven’t forgotten this.

The support for Palestine is widespread in South Africa because of this as well as the parallels between the apartheid regime and the Israeli government.

So yeah, it makes political sense for SA to take Israel to court like this, but I honestly think a big reason for it is historical and showing genuine support for Palestine.

You shouldn’t be. As a resident of the country you are proud of, I can assure you, whatever their motivations are, they are not good. SA supports Russia but calls what the IDF is doing genocide. The South African government mainly consists of two-faced thieves.

As a South African too, i will remain proud of South Africa for bringing this case of genocide against Israel.

You talk about motivations , so why didn’t the US, UK or one of the European countries open a case of genocide against Israel?

If South Africa, with it’s all its flaws, was able to bring a case of genocide against Israel, what does that say of those countries that couldn’t do that. Those countries that purport to be defenders of human rights and freedom that are unable to mention crimes against humanity and Israel in the same sentence, let alone the word genocide.

This shows how despicable the motivations and thieving, murdering two-facedness of the US, UK and Europe are. The blatant hypocrisy and despicable motivations of these countries are far more damning than anything you accuse South Africa of.

The genocide convention is meant to be invoked when a group is at risk of genocide, before a genocide can be completed.

So yes, i will always be proud of South Africa for invoking the genocide convention against Israel, despite naysayers focusing on the imperfections of South Africa rather than the fact that South Africa is taking the correct course of action that is sorely needed despite it’s imperfections or motivations.
