PARAMARIBO, Suriname (AP) — Former Suriname dictator Desi Bouterse, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison last month for the 1982 killings of more than a dozen political opponents, has vanished after not turning himself in to authorities on Friday as planned.
His wife, Ingrid Bouterse-Waldring, told reporters that she did not know where he was and firmly stated, “He’s not going to jail!”
Which was about as unexpected as this morning’s sunrise, honestly. He tried to get out of it on technicalities, tried for a pardon, etc.
He has zero intention on going to jail. He’s 78 and looking at 20 years; he knows he’d be dying in jail.
He’s likely in some place like Venezuela or somewhere else where they don’t extradite people like him.
