I’ve woken up with pain though my shoulders, must have slept funny. Getting older and waking up uncomfortable is rubbish.

What’s happening, dudes? I’m looking forward to taking the little man to a burger restaurant tomorrow that I’ve been trying to go to for ages. Yay for burgers.

Just discovered Lemmy because of Sync closing down (Though I’ve been a fan since the Hawkwind days) Is there anywhere I can get an ELI5 for this Fediverse thingy? I see there’s a UK-centric Feddit but I can’t get my head round how they’re connected

Welcome to the Fediverse! This is a helpful graphic

But the best thing to do is just to dive in and get used to it. It’s like Reddit, but smaller and friendlier. You can join communities (equivalents to subreddits) on any instance your home instance is federated to (which will be most of them). For example I’m on feddit.uk and it’s seamless to post here, a community on lemmy.world, and communities on any other instance.

Also once your instance upgrades to version 0.18 which will be soon, that’s a big usability upgrade.

Thanks very much! That wasn’t a helpful graphic, that was an INCREDIBLY helpful graphic lol. Been using Sync for about 13 years so I’m hoping LJ comes up with something amazing!

You’ve signed up on lemmy.world, which is one server running the Lemmy software. feddit.uk is another server running the Lemmy software. These two servers (and many, many more) are interoperable and you’ll see people from various other servers (or “instances”) posting in this very thread.

To interact with a community on another instance you need to visit it through your home one. So for example [email protected] will take you directly to the original URL of that community, with instructions in the sidebar on how to subscribe from your home instance. Or I can just give you this local link to take you straight there through lemmy.world.

As others have said but also I use the kbin.social instance which has a slightly different looking interface but still federates (shares content) with the other instances

Another way to think about the fediverse is you know all those annoying “local” newspapers that have maybe one or two local articles then a billion clickbait or advertisements disguises as articles that could be from anywhere. Well each trumptonnews.co.uk or pontypamdyadvertiser.co.uk or greendalegazzette.com is like an instance but all the articles are shared…except hopfully for threads it is interesting stuff not guff.
