Greta was the director and reason the film was made as it is, I feel like she deserves the nomination.

I’ve seen people arguing Robbie should have gotten a nomination but I feel like “best actor” is such a crowded award that people get snubbed all the time.

I agree. If anyone of the three of them- Gosling, Robbie and Gerwig deserves an Oscar, it’s Greta Gerwig. And women do not win enough Oscars outside of gendered categories anyway.

We should not put any restrictions, quota, or actions that would artificially raise someone above anyone else for an award. If the awards are for artistic merit, then that should be the criteria in which the categories are judged.

There is a big difference between encouraging more female directors to be nominated and some sort of artificial thing. Greta Gerwig made the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros’ 100-year history. She absolutely deserves to be nominated for best director on that alone. But she wasn’t.

If you want to rank movies by their box office success, you can just… you know, read the list of highest grossing movies of the year.

Do you think maybe the highest-grossing movie for Warner Brothers ever, not just the year, might be because of the direction? Shouldn’t that be considered? Consideration isn’t winning.

No it shouldn’t. The direction of a movie should be considered on its own merit, not based on its financial success.

Isn’t financial success a measure of merit?

Was it well directed though? Subjective. I personally don’t see much in the way of a directorial effort that’s worth a golden statue, but it’s competently put together. Her being the primary creative force behind the movie isn’t criterion in which I would nominate anyone for Best Director.
