The thing Russia does differently than everyone else is give vehicles a new name when they receive an upgrade. A F-15E has ground attack capabilities and a 2nd operator that the F-15C doesn’t have. Yet, they are still both F-15 variants. Meanwhile, Russia has like 5 different flanker designations (Su-27, Su-30, Su-33, Su-35, Su-37, J-11) and a few T-72 designations for things that are the same base vehicle.
It’s posturing, they know they’ve been rehashing the same base vehicles since the Cold War. There aren’t many modern vehicles that match Western Standards. It’s worked for awhile but now the cats out of the bag.
