On some level nobody but the Israelis can stop this.

At the very least, the US has a very good chance of stopping it. Biden is almost as much to blame as Netanyahu for this.

I disagree. All he can do is talk and he has done some of that. Netanyahu’s whole political life is on the line and he doesn’t need to curry favor with Washington. A right wing US gov is a huge win for him and he can damage Biden by ignoring him and making him look weak. Gaza will burn until November.

Now if you wanted to blame say, every US president since Truman for this mess, I am right there with you. We made this monster. But at this point, it is beyond our control.

He’s done more than talk, he’s been circumventing congress to sell weapons to Israel. He’s using the power afforded by his elected office to materially support a genocide because he’s a massive Zionist and always has been.

That’s pretty much my point. What can he do? Talk big and watch isreal flip him the bird? He has zero leverage with the Likud government. They know it, he knows it.

The political tactics of the 10/7 attack should be studied for centuries. Iran and Russia have so thoroughly played the west and left leaning western governments, it’s astonishing. Sacrifice Hamas and millions of innocent people in Gaza and completely emasculate the only people in the world that are standing up to your tyranny.

Even selling them weapons would be an improvement - then they’d at least have a slight financial incentive not to use them indiscriminately. Right now, the US is supplying them for free.

The worst part is knowing the only direction he’d go with a policy change would be the wrong direction and pay them for every missile or bullet they are willing to take.

The ICJ isn’t selling anyone anything. What are you even talking about? The ICJ basically did little to stop Israel and seemingly gave more power to Israel with the “Hamas and other militant groups must hand back the hostages without conditions,” which I’m sure they will follow. /s

I thought you were the other guy and I was trying to figure out the nice way to figure out how stupid you were to misunderstand so colossally, I even went back at first to see if I had responded to the wrong person.

Then I thought to check the end.

I applaud you good bot! 👏👏👏👏 that was just 😘

All he can do is talk and he has done some of that

Biden bypassed normal procedures to expedite weapons sales to Israel twice in December alone.

        Source: Haaretz

Is that the kind of talk you’re referring to?

Israel is currently blockading Gaza, starving the civilians and denying them medical care. So the US could send them some aid - just food, medicines, water purifiers and so on, nothing that could even be misinterpreted as a weapon - on an aircraft carrier. Distribute it directly to civilians. Oh, and while they’re there, arrest any Hamas fighter who tries to interfere, and turn them over to the Israeli courts. Help the people, humiliate the extremist leaders on both sides, and show voters in both countries that a peaceful solution is possible and desirable.

Are we supposed to be the world police, or aren’t we? I can never keep up.

That is a concern, yes. I guess a more neutral military power - maybe France - might be better at doing this. But the question was what the US can do, and sending aid is probably more helpful than sending bullets.

France being the world police isn’t exactly better. Ask any number of Francophone countries. The issue of America being the world police is generally acknowledged to be that the idea of a single country being the arbiter of when force is legitimate is problematic at best.

But the question was what the US can do, and sending aid is probably more helpful than sending bullets.

At this junction, probably not. Any aid sent will either be intercepted by the Israelis (and thus destroyed), or used by Hamas for their own ends (and thus, at best, misappropriated).

The only thing that the US can and should do at this point is get out. Condemn Israel’s genocide, stop selling weapons, rescind all aid.

France being the world police isn’t exactly better.

True, but unlike the US they have an okay reputation among the Palestinians.

Any aid sent will either be intercepted by the Israelis (and thus destroyed), or used by Hamas for their own ends (and thus, at best, misappropriated).

Hence the ’ … on an aircraft carrier’. Neither Israel nor Hamas will mess with an actual superpower.
