This community is an offshoot of r/ToiletPaperUSA over on the other platform so a lot of the culture surrounding this media is likely to be shared, however, that doesn’t mean we have to match them exactly.
To start off, I’d like to open a discussion on rules and what we would consider good for the community and it’s growth/sustainability. We want to make good memes that people want to see but we also don’t want people to think the terrible fake quotes we are coming up with are real because that diminishes the impact of the ACTUAL terrible things that right wing grifters actually say. Unfortunately, as of writing, Lemmy doesn’t support tagging a post. For that reason, I think it would be best to implement a naming system [REAL] or [FAKE] depending on which it is. We can let the conservatives talk themselves into a corner instead of spreading misinformation.
Another rule to bring up is the Meme Weekends that r/ToiletPaperUSA does. This restricts weekend posting to ONLY fake TPUSA memes and doesn’t allow tweets or anything during the weekend. I wouldn’t mind implementing this as well but I’m a bit more hesitant on it. On one hand I do feel it would help with the general quality of the community but on the other hand, a small community needs an active group of posters in order to take off. Unless the community votes in favor of sticking with this, I think it would be best to ignore it until the community is self sustaining.
On the note of quality content, I don’t think anyone will disagree with banning low effort content. The example they use is a red eyed Ben Shapiro saying “When someone says ‘FEELINGS’”. That kind of post can work but I think its best for a dedicated Lemmy shitposting community instead.
All rules like bigotry and fascism go without saying. I’m not allowing any of that stuff here.
I agree all around. Good write up!
