Texas would stagnate or crater without the enormous wealth federal defense spending brings in the form of two gigantic posts (Cavazos/bliss are ridiculously large) and dozens and dozens of other bases and ports - plus billions in defense spending on hardware produced there. I almost hope they try it just to see the FAFO but conversely there’s too many good people (and lots of great food) to be lost.
