So we already have a left-sided/right-sided central midfielder (Havertz) to replace Xhaka; a defensive midfielder (Rice) incoming to replace Partey; and a RCB/RB (Timber) incoming to help there (and allow Tomi to cover more on LB).

What other areas do people here think we need?

I wouldn’t mind seeing stronger competition for Jesus up front, and maybe another young defence midfield prospect. But otherwise we are looking in good shape.

Would personally prefer a better backup RW than an out-of-position Nelson, but he deserves a chance and will be cheaper than anyone we could get who would be willing to be behind Saka.

I think the aim with Nelson is to turn him into a general purpose rotational forward, who can play anywhere up the top. That way he should get enough game time and it wouldn’t preclude us getting more dedicated backup for Saka and/or Jesus.

I feel like Nelson as a CF would be an incredible waste, but I could see him at midfield eventually.

I thought it was always dependent on us signing Rice, which hasn’t happened… yet!

I think he’s basically gone. And it’s good timing. He’s reaching the point where he will start declining in the fast-paced, physical PL. And he’s had a fantastic redemption arc, so he’s going out on a high. Not to mention, Arteta’s tactics will probably be evolving, and Xhaka isn’t the most adaptable player. It’s a good time for both him and the club to part ways. Best of luck to him in Germany.

Interestingly, I read something today saying that Timber might be used in midfield (presumably as a DM) , and not exclusively in defence. I don’t know a ton about the lad. But if he’s a typical Arteta long-term signing he’s very good with his feet and positionally flexible (e.g. Saliba, White, Zinchenko). So I suppose it’s not that ridiculous in theory.

Obvious one is a player that can both cover Saka and Jesus, while offering something different in those positions from what we currently have.
