The operator of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) has filed a petition to hike its fares, as it earlier cited struggles in finances as revenues have not been enough to compensate for expenses.

According to Transportation Assistant Secretary for Railways and MRT3 officer-in-charge Jorjette Aquino, the petition seeks to hike the boarding fare by P2.29 from the current P11 to P13.29, and the distance fare from P1 per kilometer to P1.21 per kilometer.

At present, the current fares have a minimum of P13 and maximum of P28.

A report by GMA Integrated News’ Joseph Morong on Balitanghali quoted Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Cesar Chavez as saying that they expect the decision on their petition to come out in two months’ time.

The new petition is in line with earlier announcements made by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), after a similar petition that was filed in January was not acted upon.

Echoing the sentiment of the others here: MRT‌ has been operating at a loss, and this has effects on maintenance and service.

Masakit mang pasanin, kailangan talagang tanggapin. MRT without gov’t subsidy would need to charge fares roughly around 60php (random guesstimate) for the entire line–kapantay ng bus fares covering the same distance, to somehow break even. I haven’t crunched any numbers here though. Magkano na ba bus fares ngayon?

EDSA carousel bus from Ayala to Trinoma is 35php. The train for the same distance is 24php I think. We probably one of the lowest train fares in the world. average cheapest fare elsewhere is around 50-60 php converted.

Ah, thanks for this info. Di pa ako nakakasakay ng EDSA bus carousel eh, pero di ba subsidized din ito? 🤔

My random guesstimate of 60 PhP for the entire line is based on pre-pandemic bus fares eh, so wala pang EDSA bus carousel.

Di ako sure kung subsidized pa rin siya, pero definitely di na siya libre like last year.

I see, thanks! Suspiciously low kasi yung pasahe sa EDSA‌ bus carousel eh, that’s why I was wondering if it’s a subsidized fare.

Here’s a news story I found that makes me think it’s indeed a discounted (subsidized) price: LTFRB eyes discounts instead of ‘Libreng Sakay’ in EDSA Bus Carousel Kaso ala naman akong makitang news article kung ano nangyari dun sa plano na yan.
