Toyota is developing a carbon capture technology in a race-spec hydrogen-powered GR Corolla that debuted last summer at a five-hour endurance race in Japan. Per Automotive News, the new filtering device removes the greenhouse gas from the atmosphere as it drives.

The carbon capture tech consists of two circular filters - one on the front of the engine bay and another on the inlet of the air cleaner, which sucks 60 liters of air per second. The filters - made with a ceramic catalyst coated with a carbon dioxide absorbent developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries - trap carbon dioxide from the air and are later absorbed by a receptacle of fluid that stores carbon dioxide from the filters.
