    This is so stupid because the employer has no control over your withholdings. It’s entirely based on how you fill out your W4. An employer can only require that your name, address, and ssn are accurate, but they cannot require any proof for how you fill out the rest of the form. You come up with ‘head of household’ and add an additional exemption of 100k in step 4, meaning you have 50 dependents, entirely up to you. Would be a dumb move but the employer has no control over your exemptions, it’s the employee that fills out the W4.

    That being said, an employer cannot ‘reset your exemptions to 0’ unless the irs sends them a letter demanding they do that… it does happen, forgot what the IRS exemption override mandate letter is called, but none of this is up to the employer.
