I played long, long ago and I’m toying with the idea of casually coming back. However, I’ve heard that the cost to play has skyrocketed. From what I can see the most basic, standard decks start at around $500, and only go up from there.

I’m not interested in coming back if it means spending several thousand dollars a year.

Say if you were to just buy boxes as the new sets came out, how many boxes would you likely have to buy in a year to be able to build a couple distinct decks?

Is 2v2 money drafting still a thing? When does the next base set start?

Any other commentary or advice is welcome. Let me know if this is buying a boat.

If you want to be competitive on a budget, standard is definitely not the way to go. You can always play jank but if you play against other people they are very likely to destroy you.

Personally I always feel like Pauper is the answer. Lots of variety and reasonably priced decks. The problem is finding other people to play with you, they don’t usually like playing with commons only. I own an out of date pauper battle box and it’s a great way to play with friends. 500$ is enough to buy a lot of meta decks and the cost per set is usually very low, it’s all commons after all. My average per set is 5-10 bucks.

I want to be competitive, not on a budget.

If it’s too expensive to build good decks, I’d rather just not start.

If you want to be competitive then yes, it’s very expensive. Definitely in the thousands if you meta-deck more than 1 or 2 decks.
