"The author of Invader Zim used to make some really wacky comic books about a suicidal serial killer who couldn’t pull the trigger, who turned out to be serving a greater purpose by culling the herd on earth but he only learns that after rigging up a rube goldberg to shoot himself when his phone goes off (but nobody would ever call him) except today was the day that somebody did in fact call him. He goes to hell and is unimpressed with the devil so the devil transforms into a blonde cheerleader to punish him, which is highly effective.

Hang on, your order is ready…"

And some Nickelodeon executive said, “give that guy a show!”

I mean I’m glad that they did, but it’s kind of like having Chuck Tingle do a family sitcom.

It is funny you say that because I think one theory is that Chuck Tingle might have been created by one of the McElroy brothers during their time at Polygon.

You could almost consider what they do now to be an audio family sitcom.

I really only listen to sawbones but I asked my wife who is a fan and she thinks it isn’t true because she has a vague memory of the McElroy brothers of having done an interview with Chuck Tingle’s son. I asked if they could have just hired an actor, but she doesn’t think it was a bit because the son was basically like “my father is a schizophrenic and this is how they work through their sexuality.” So not funny necessarily.

I was mostly joking. I love those 3 delightful doofuses and having finally caught up on the back catalog of MBMBAM am branching out to their diaspora of other podcasts.

Also Monster Factory on YouTube. Glorious nonsense by Justin and Griffin.

Also, both modeled and named after the author — who then later went by “Yonen” to differentiate himself from the homicidal maniac shooting up schools he was drawing while still in school…

          The 90s were wild.

source: I know his former classmates personally, and they each wanted to be far AF away from him ASAP.

I knew a guy like this in highschool. We actually bonded over JTHM. He actually got me into webcomics and we started drawing our own that we would hand off to each other between classes. It was fantastic. I wonder what happened to that dude. Time to go dig out a yearbook!

Was a fan of his stuff while in school, but holy shit. His comics are hard to read anymore because it’s very clear that his most insufferable characters are more or less self inserts. Just an amalgamation of shit takes assuming the worst of every person at an “I’m 14 and this is deep” level of insight. Like yes, of course you didn’t have friends, Johnny. You think everybody is morally and intellectually beneath you. Brilliant artist and creator, but I don’t think I’d want to meet the guy.

It’s probably even more fucked up than what you’re picturing, though pretty funny if you enjoy very dark humor.
