Why? It’s useful for people who struggle to read the tone of replies, and let’s be honest, that’s happened all of us at some point.
What I want to see die is the ridiculous swapping of letters for symbols in words like r@pe or su!cide. This is not TikTok or Instagram, your Reddit/lemmy posts are not monetised. You do not need to censor trigger or swear words.
If you have to explain that something is sarcasm then it’s not sarcasm.
At that point you might as well just say what you want to say without encoding it in an additional tone or layer which requires extra thought on the part of the reader.
It’s messy and dumb. People should be able to figure it out through context. Even if they can’t… who cares. Makes zero difference if people don’t get it. This isn’t reddit. You’re not collecting karma. It’s irrelevant if you get down voted.

It takes a millisecond to add /s for context, and it’s helpful for a lot of people. It has nothing to do with karma or downvotes.
It’s messy and stupid.
Excellent rebuttal @MedicPigBabySaver your well thought out argument has completely convinced me.
See. Wear them down and they’ll accept. ᕙ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ᕗ
