It’s wild reading just one comic without any context and expecting a punchline. I guess this probably makes sense if it’s just one exchange in a full story but oh man this barely feels like a comic strip to me right now without context.
ETA I just went to revisit this strip, and it turns out it was a Sunday strip (which always stood alone, but a lot of times still tied in with the current story arc.) So this was a really bad example.

Much of bloom county is this way. There are some strips that stand alone (pear dimples being one), but not so much in the beginning.
