Friend, Japan started that war and refused to surrender. The American people literally did not want to participate in that specific war.
The USA is really fucking good at killing people. Japan knew this and they still decided to attack.
Loss of civilian life is unavoidable when two countries initiate a full scale war. Does it suck to be on the losing end of that? Absolutely. Unfortunately, at the time, war consisted of bombing and ground warfare. Japan seemed to have no plans to leave the USA alone so the American hand was forced to pick between the few very bad options. All of them would result in a dramatic loss of life.
By that logic, 9/11 was justified cause of what America did to Arabs. By your logic, when your country invaded mine without cause and killed my people, it would have been justified for me to murder you and every American

The mothers and babies who were incinerated by American nukes weren’t involved. Wanna go after the Japanese Army or government? Go for it. Don’t murder babies and call it a good thing

Rape of nanking in particular comes to mind as an example where they are not abiding by the standards you suggest.

Yes, yes I do hold them to that standard. The Japanese Army did atrocious things in China, and just like Americans, they justified it by claiming it was the lesser evil. I don’t understand why you think Japan’s war crimes are a justification for nuking a city. Especially since nobody knew about those atrocities at the time, and also because Americans have never cared about dead Chinese.
I’ll make this simple for you: America did not want to be involved in the war that Japan forced them into. They were suffering mass casualties in the pacific theater. The Japanese were torturing US POWs and using suicide kamikaze attacks against US naval vessels which also resulted in huge numbers of casualties.
They figured nuking these guys a couple of times would finally get them to fucking stop, and what do you know? It did. Mission accomplished. End of story.
They were justified because doing that allowed them to finally stop getting killed and tortured by the nation that attacked them first. I too hate the fact that the Japanese imperial government put its people in such peril with so little regard for their safety.
I think it’s much harder to justify systemic rape and murder of civilians across months as being the “lesser” evil, but maybe that’s just me…

Who is calling it a good thing? Nobody in this thread is celebrating the bombing. They are saying it was necessary or at least justified and they are more correct than you.
