I dislike common core (at least as it relates to math) because it prioritizes tricks to solve equations rather than a fundamental understanding of operations.
Yeah, my daughter is learning that and while it’s nice to see them teaching some tricks that I picked up on my own to speed up mental calculations, it’s baffling that they don’t do memorization of the times tables anymore. Sure, that was something both the people who were good with math and the ones who were bad with math had to do back in the day, but it is an essential part of my ability to do quick mental math to this day.
You need the foundation first before you can build fancy things on top of it.
