The symptoms normally disappear after several days and there are no adverse health effects.

The cause of pine mouth has not been determined, but several researchers have indicated that a particular species and source of pine nut, Pinus armandii exported from the Shaanxi and Shanxi regions of China, may be responsible for causing the symptoms. This species of pine nut was previously only consumed locally and not widely exported for consumption as whole nuts.

Yes, as a chef this happened to me for two weeks. It was after cooking a pine nut dish and over toasting pine nuts. Then because I wasn’t convinced if they were too far gone or not I kept going back to taste and ate probably more than I should have normally.

My doctor told me it was because of the flu I just had but I was well over that by then. I did my own research for days and eventually found out it was because of this.

Pretty scary being a chef and everything you taste is super bitter. I went back to my doctor and informed him of the pine nut case too.

On a side note cola actually tasted like heaven during this ordeal.
