This is why one of the first commands my dogs learn is “leave it”
They pick up something they shouldn’t and the second they hear that command their prize hits the floor. One of my dogs was saved from a potential poisoning because of this. I feel it’s the most important command they can learn.

Works until it’s food in my experience. Hard to convince them to leave food.
It just takes some work. Mine will leave high value treats if I tell them to.
