    If that’s $3k/yr after paying a care home, that’s not so bad.

    Social security is based on what you pay in: your top 35 years. If he truly only gets $3k/year, did he even work? Yes, you could argue there should be something need based

      Sorry what?? $250 a month is not enough even when you don’t have to pay for housing or food. He would still have to pay if he wanted a cell phone. What about this copay on meds? I doubt there he has that coved 100%. According to the AARP “…1 in 5 adults of Medicare age, out-of-pocket health care costs in 2021 exceeded $2,000…” Or say he wants to go anywhere. It is likely he can’t drive, and if he could he couldn’t afford to keep a car, so that is rideshare or taxis for anywhere the senior van doesn’t go. Assuming there even is one.

      But no he is most likely getting more than 3K but it is eaten up by the care home. Medicare is terrible at covering any type of assisted living. It covers full on hospital stays but the light care that keeps people out of the hospital not so much.
