This sub is Forgotten Weapons, but this guide is for the M16A1 rifle, which is what I qualified on when I joined the US Air Force in 2002. I continued to use that rifle until about 2014, when they finally swapped it out with the M4 rifle. (Basically a modern compact variant of the M16A1). I retired last year, so I’m not sure what’s going on with their weaponry nowadays, but if it’s anything like the M16A1, we’ll probably be using the M4 for the next 5 decades or so.

The Army continued to use the M16A1 for several years after we gave them up. They always took the hand-me-down equipment, so we handed a bunch of our old rifles over to them when we upgraded. I dunno if they’ve since upgraded to the M4, I didn’t really keep up on Army news.

This community is mainly for fans of the YouTube channel Forgotten Weapons hosted by Ian McCollum who discusses firearms history. Often with obscure firearms but not always.

Currently the army is looking at adopting what will be the M7 (it’s the XM7 now) to replace the M4 for combat units.

Ah, gotcha. I came upon this post in my “everything” feed and took the name of the sub at face value. I’ll have to check out that YouTube channel.

Wow, I can’t believe the Army is already moving forward with a new primary weapon. When I retired from the Air Force last year, there was no talk about upgrading our main issued rifle. For once, the Army is being proactive about an upgrade.

Here’s his video on the XM7 (https://youtu.be/MTZRCEh1Czg?si=). Note it’s called the XM5 in the video because for some reason it changed from the XM5 to the XM7 in the past year. No clue what the XM5 and XM6 are now.

We’re also changing the M249 to what will be the M250.
