In the latest showdown over immigration law, the U.S. Department of Justice has threatened to sue the state of Texas if it doesn’t retract a new law that would allow state and local police to arrest migrants who enter the country illegally.
The law, known as Senate Bill 4, was signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott earlier this month and is set to go into effect in March.
In a letter dated Thursday, the DOJ gave Abbott until Jan. 3 to withdraw the state’s intention to enforce the law or face a “lawsuit to enforce the supremacy of federal law and to enjoin the operation of S.B. 4.” The letter cites a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court case over Arizona’s “show me your papers” law, which ruled that the law was unconstitutional and stated that the federal government, not individual states, set immigration policy.
Great. Now arrest Texas officials for human trafficking
That is actually my prediction of how they will put a stop to it.
The latest escalation of violence between the States. Remember that Texas AG Ken Paxton is attempting to get the staff of a Seattle hospital extradited for providing gender-affirming care and abortions to Texas residents. Funny how they are for “State’s Rights” until it comes back to bite them.
Democrats don’t got the balls to enforce the law.
Biden needs to do more than threaten, were on the verge of being back to Trumps border policy (in TXat least) and Biden is currently allowing it.
Be bold sir, YOU have the power.
The Justice department only gave Abbot until January 3rd to withdraw the law, then they’re suing they said in the article. Since it’s a pretty clear constitutional violation, there’s a good chance it will be stayed by a judge while the case is heard. Generally before filing a lawsuit its best to show you warned the other party to cut it out.The law also doesn’t take effect until March even if they didn’t do anything, so yes Biden is doing more than just threatening unless they retract the law within a couple days. They’ll be suing months before it takes effect unless the law is withdrawn by Texas. Texas knows this law is blatantly unconstitutional and will get overturned in a second though, it’s political grandstanding.
Thanks for the detailed comment, adds a lot of perspective
