HW video accel has been possible with xwayland before (unofficially via experimental flags and not without issues) but this change will it make work with the Wayland platform.

Good for them, I guess. But has been working on Firefox since quite some time now

Believe it or not, most people use chromium based browsers. The statement, “no one cares about Firefox” is more true than the reverse.
Cool, but who uses chromium? Normal people use Firefox.
This should also affect Electron apps
Chromium, even on Linux has huge marketshare. I can’t find data breakdowns but it should be fairly obvious
