I had tickets to see this movie over the holiday break, but then my wife and I both came down with Covid, so we had to miss it. Looking forward to catching it at some point in the future.

I saw the English dub and loved it. Was very surprised by a lot of the VAs in it.

Congrats! I haven’t seen it yet but it’s still showing here so I might see it when I have the time.

Also, I don’t remember seeing a Japanese animated film (or let alone an Asian animated film) win a Golden Globe before. I’m not sure if there were restrictions on eligibility or region before but it’s nice to see two Japanese animated films get nominated for an award like this.

Looking at the list of winners in the category, this is definitely the first anime film to have won. Very few have even been nominated in the past. As far as I could tell from a glance, there are only four:

      • 2023 - The Boy and the Heron (won)
      • 2023 - Suzume
      • 2022 - Inu-Oh
      • 2018 - Mirai
  • PonyOfWar

Well deserved. Saw it in the cinema last Friday. Quite a dark and complex story for a Ghibli movie. Visually phenomenal, probably the best looking anime I’ve ever seen.

I watched it a few days ago and it was… Alright. Maybe I’m just getting older but it didn’t hit nearly the same as past Ghibli movies. It definitely wasn’t bad, but so much weird random stuff kept happening, it was hard to keep up and understand what was going on. I’ll have to give it another try in the future.

Sometimes it just doesn’t connect with you. I have similar thoughts about Suzume. It has phenomenal reviews, but I didn’t get the hype other than it being visually stunning. I wrote out more of my thoughts here on Suzume a while back.
