So, everyone has been asking for Golden Sun for ages. For someone who knows nothing about them (other than watching the trailer above), anything I should know about them before starting them?

Don’t be afraid to backtrack when you learn new abilities, there’s a ton of stuff hidden everywhere, including things you can’t even see. Sometimes random NPC give you valuable information on how to progress or find a treasure.

If you get stuck, try to use your parties outside battle abilities, there certainly is a spot you missed.

Don’t mute the audio, the soundtrack is fantastic and addicting. Put it on loud.

The original games had a world map included each, I found it quite helpful to not get lost in the world map travel. You might want to find them online, best the original, even if it’s just a photo, as to not spoiler more than the original game did with it’s paper map. It just had you displayed the cities and geography but not more.

Sometimes backtracking can suck, especially if you walk all the way back from x to y through z, but don’t let it get you frustrated, it shouldn’t happen too often for the main story. Look at it as training, money farming and invitation to test for hidden paths you might have missed the first time. It’s always worth it.

Don’t expect to 100% the first time, stuff is really hidden well, but in a fair way. The game rewards experimenting by a good bit.

Enjoy and take your time. It’s my most favorite game ever.

Don’t be afraid to mess around with the class system and try out things beyond the default mono-elemental classes. There’s no penalty for changing your class setup every so often, or even after every fight

The second game has a secret dungeon that is unlocked by collecting all Djinns in both games. No Djinn is missable within their own game, but this obviously doesn’t apply across games. You can miss 1 Djinn of each element in the first game and the second one will give you an opportunity to encounter them there to help you out, but that’s the end of the leeway.

        Ouch…

I probably won’t go for 100%. When specially trying / grinding for 100% on PS for trophies, it often burned me out of the games. So, now I only try that if I am REALLY enjoying the game, and even then if it start becoming frustrating I just leave it.

Luckily it isn’t a collectathon with hours and hours of junk scattered everywhere. Look up how many djinn there are before deciding if you don’t want to find them.

This is one of the greatest games ever. That being said, just download an emulator and the roms and play them for free. You don’t need Nintendo Switch Online for them.

NSO is still such a piss off. The only way to back up your saves is by paying. No other console requires that.

Finally! This is awesome for new gamers to experience. The official release video from Nintendo doesn’t do much to showcase the game or explain the story, but this is a worthwhile gem spread across two games that tell one story.

Hopefully many people try it out so we can convince Nintendo to plan for a remake like Super Mario RPG.

Did they finally fixed the issues with emulation of titles like Ocarina of time? Really interested in trying it out but the news about the issues are holding me back.

They did fix the N64 emulation issues, but the GBA emulation never had those issues to begin with

There are occasionally very minor issues, stuff that most people won’t usually notice. But the issues you heard about have all been fixed.

It is worth noting that no N64 emulator out there is perfect, and some of the titles on NSO are among the most notorious for buggy emulation no matter what emulator you use.

Edit: also the other emulators on NSO are pretty much perfect.

I just realised that on top of the potential issues with the emulation, you are not able to buy the game for good and have to “rent” it through their shitty only subscription. No thank you, I think I will than use the HD Fan remake for computer, even if thats more in a greyzone than legal.

Yeah I hate that too. I’ll just get the subscription once to be able to play it on my switch and then unsubscribe. I wish I could just buy it but I don’t need NSO otherwise. Too bad you can’t keep playing once the subscription runs out. Normal NSO isn’t even enough you need NSO+ :(

I’ve played the original. Graphics and puzzles were outstanding, especially for so early in the GBA’s life.

But I found the music and story to be underwhelming. (Except for the Venus Lighthouse theme, that was quite the banger)

Is the second game better in those regards?

It’s really one game split into two. There’s some new tracks in The Lost Age, but if you weren’t a fan of the first OST, the second isn’t any different.

The story continues in the sequel and rounds things out a bit more. If I had to pick between the two, The Lost Age is my favourite, but you can’t have that without the first.

I was a child in the 90s: I absolutely played the second without knowing about the first.

Not saying you can’t play just one or the other, but they’re both made better by the existence of the other.

The story worked well for me as a kid, but every time I tried to replay it, I felt like there was WAY too much dialogue. Not that dialogue is a bad thing, but they were using way too many words to say something, and never seemed to get to the point.

But the soundtrack had a lot of memorable hits. I haven’t played the game in more than a decade, but I can still remember a few of the tracks. The GBA itself didn’t have the best sound production capabilities, but the compositions in Golden Sun are fantastic from what I remember.
