An ex-admin to whom we have given access to the server, has reported us to the server provider. Also we were already planning to migrate somewhere else. So right now we’re moving to a more secure server.

I’ll try to make a smooth transition. Any interaction (post, comment, like etc.) after 11AM (CET) will be deleted, but the site will not be down during migration. It will be an estimated 1 hour process.

Update: its done. Hopefully without problems. If you see this, you are on the new server.

Wow. I don’t know what all the hubbub was about, but I just want to say thanks. Y’all are providing a valuable service and it seems like you’re taking a lot of shit for it. Your work is appreciated.

    Please clear your DNS caches.

Ironically, if you can read this, you don’t have to clear your dns cache ;)

I don’t understand the problem, does the server provider refuse to host NSFW content ?

Lots of hosts aren’t allowing porn on their servers. Even if everything is legal. It’s not worth the risk for them.

I understand the same as you: “It’s not ok to host infringing material, including infringing pornographic content”. So in my understanding, as long as it’s original content, it should be ok.

Would this also include gambling materials? something else mentioned in the same section. Is that okay so long as it’s original digital poker chips?

                I don’t have a legal background, here’s how I understand it.

The key element of the section is “applicable law”. You can ignore everything after the first sentence, it’s just examples of things that might be banned by applicable law. (it also states “not limited to”, so we could argue that under this section, anything can be banned)

All these things are ok, as long as they do not violate applicable law. So digital chip or real chips are okay, as long as the user accessing it is from a region where the applicable law does not ban it. A list of abortion clinics is ok, as long as the user accessing it is not from a state or country banning it.

This entire section is just a legal shield so that they cannot be held responsible for the type of content you host. They just shift the legal responsibility towards the server admin.

Again, it’s just how I understand it. It would be cool if someone with a legal background could show up here and clarify it for us.

I just sent a screenshot of their ToS, and you are being forced to move hosts after 1 complaint. How is this somehow not enough evidence for you?

The screenshot you posted says that the provision against hosting copyrighted content without permission includes pornography, not that pornography itself is against the terms.

And it sounds like the move is a precaution being taken because of a disgruntled ex-admin, not by force.

Yes and in the exact same section right after pornography they also mention “content that offends common decency, gambling, material that could seriously endanger the morals of children or young people or violate the rights of third parties”. Does this mean it’s okay to post gambling content so long as the digital poker chips are original? What about content that offends common decency? Is that okay so long as it’s original content that offends common decency?

It depends. The provision is against infringing on the rights of others or otherwise violating the law, which those things may or may not do. Porn and online gambling are both legal (albeit regulated) in Germany, where Hetzner is based. Hetzner sucks anyways though so they don’t have my sympathies.

Ha, man that sucks. Glad the transition went smoothly.

TBH this place has some strict rules regarding content so I am surprised that an ISP would even care. I’m guessing since this instance still hosts LGBT content it could put someone in hot water in some more morally strict countries.

First a back-end mod tries to poison the well. Now an admin tries to sabotage the servers. Seditionists everywhere!

I am curious how you knew who reported the server? Did the ISP inform you, or did the ex-admin tell you afterwards as some act of defiance? And what even caused them to do this in the first place?

Edit: Misread server provider as service provider. Please disregard the ISP related questions.

Hetzner (server provider/hoster, not ISP) has strict no-porn rules. So even if you run the most vanilla stuff you can get booted from their service.

It’s kinda crazy how much people complain. This is free. They’re not paying anything. They could go elsewhere or setup their own. Instead they just want to shit on other peoples fun. Wtf?

Anyway, glad it went smooth. And thanks for all that you do.

Thanks for everything the admin(s) do to make this page possible. It’s not just a corner of the internet where people talk about pornography and #nsfw things. It’s much more than that.

    An approach,

    • for open source,
    • for the community,
    • for an open and liberal communication
    • a role model how to deal with different opinions on (sometimes quite challenging topics and borders).

I’ve just discovered first hand what it means to make the first contribution as a mod (nothing! compared to what others are doing here). And I can’t even fathom the effort it means for those who make all this possible here in the first place. In fact, everyone should be grateful and do their part (support the community, donate, post and comment) which can be done to take the burden off admins.

I believe I saw in the other post that the admin team was planning on moving to a Russian server. Is this true?

Given current circumstances in the world, I would like to know if the server fees paid are going to the Russian government (via taxes) and thereby supporting an ongoing conflict.

We are back once again! Until the current host finds out that you’re hosting pornographic content in a jurisdiction where porn is illegal, that is.

    For those who missed it.

TL;DR: Admins originally chose hosting provider who did not allow pornography. They are now moving to a new hosting provider, with their new server located in a country where pornography is outright illegal.

These are the same admins who are constantly talking about having to make sure that everything they are doing is legal. 🤔

How can you say this when you are currently hosting in a country where pornography is outright illegal? Not to mention choosing a host which didn’t allow pornography in the first place.

Doesn’t sound like you care about legality much at all to me.

Nope. He was in my radar for a while. He’s here to complain. No posts, comments, votes etc. Only complaining about how bad this instance is. I suspect he was from another instance, since he was promoting it so much.

Note that, I’m not against promoting instances but not this way.

This might just be me, but does anyone else have the issue that videos can’t be opened within the lemmy interface anymore? When I click on a video hosted on files.catbox.moe, it just doesn’t expand anymore. It did that yesterday…

Also, I think I saw on another instance that redgifs Videos could be expanded in the interface as well. Was that added in a newer version? If so, it would be really cool if this instance could update.
