NATO countries need to be on red alert for war and “expect the unexpected,” the chair of the alliance’s military committee of national chiefs Rob Bauer said Wednesday.

“In order to be fully effective, also in the future, we need a warfighting transformation of NATO,” said Bauer during a meeting of military chiefs in Brussels. “For this too, public-private cooperation will be the key.”

Bauer, a Dutch admiral, said allies need to “focus on effectiveness” and ramp up defense readiness with more exercises, industry partnerships and troops on high alert.

I think about this and reference it all the time in real life. Nobody else I know IRL is a serious Trekkie though, so they have no idea what the context is unfortunately. It is still so damn impressive to me how many things they got right in that episode from an overall societal context: homelessness, ghettoization, gentrification, class warfare, global corporatization, etc. It really is one of the better social commentaries in all of Star Trek in my humble opinion.

I don’t think they want war. And I don’t, personally. I think it’s one of the worst things that could happen.

But it could be triggered by an external aggressor. And NATO needs to be ready for it, if they want to maintain overwhelming dominance if an incident happens and avoid long wars.

As opposed to pulling a 1940 France and getting steamrolled in a couple months? No thanks.

I’m not interested in debating with catchy phrases. I’d rather be precise with my words. An invasion is unacceptable. Defence is another thing.

Having myself trained in Muay Thai because I got mugged isn’t an escalation. It’s survival.

Letting yourself be obliterated in the name of hoping that the people who obliterate you cultivate peace is some of the most inane logic I’ve ever encountered. “I’ll let you dominate me, please don’t hurt me too much 🥺🙏.”

We should bring back armed duels or maybe a game of football to decide who wins a war. Maybe the people would be happy then after all.

All of them bilionairs, wanna be rulers (there not ruling shit, its ALL an ego trip). Hit the fucking reset button and start over. And if it all turns to crap i hope one of these fucking bombs falls near enough to me that it will be over fast and enough of them fall that there is nothing to rule over. Such a waste of. And all for money and fucking ego.

Well, I’m not ready to have my world reset, thankyouverymuch.

I’ve been around long enough to know that this ebbs and flows, and to know WHO put these billionaires in power. If you vote Republican, you vote for lies, for double-dealing, and the throwing away of the rule of law. They’ve been enabling this since Reagan, and people buy into it because Fox and other Republican-aligned Anger Engines will commiserate with you and point fingers are who they think is to blame…which is anyone other than Republicans.

We’ve always had the power to stop them, but they keep us disorganized and fighting each other while they skin the cream off the top. Anarchy isn’t an answer - it’s a big nothing burger; no solutions, only more anger.

What fucking scares them? Organizing. Us getting together and not buying their shill. Getting together and unionizing for better wages and work (hi Norway!). Getting together and taking those politicians and anger engines off their stage. Beware any politician or celebrity who acts like one of you but then tries get you to vote against your own best interests. These fuckers need to fear us, and nothing works better than turning those channels off, ignoring their socials and voting those politicians out. You want to get angry? Fuck the influence!

Don’t give up. Giving up is giving in. Fight!

Thats a little bit got me hesitant to trust this.

All this guy does is think about war and war threats. Does that make him good at reading the room about war tensions? Probably. Does it also mean he is hypervigilant and overanalyzing every single thing and at risk of reading intent and threat into things where it isnt? Also probably.

Countries are always war tense somewhere, because someone is always pissing in someone elses pool. It doesnt always lead to war, especially when no one actually wants a war.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

NATO countries need to be on red alert for war and “expect the unexpected,” the chair of the alliance’s military committee of national chiefs Rob Bauer said Wednesday.

Bauer, a Dutch admiral, said allies need to “focus on effectiveness” and ramp up defense readiness with more exercises, industry partnerships and troops on high alert.

While NATO countries have sharply increased defense spending and pledged major new contracts to arms manufacturers in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it’s taken a while to ramp up output.

Bauer has been frank in the past about the need to standardize 155 caliber heavy ammunition, for example, so that it’s easier for countries to cooperate on artillery stocks and deliver supplies to Ukraine that can be used in different weapon systems.

“Militarily, there are many more steps to be taken to get where we want to be for our collective defense,” said Bauer, citing Ukraine’s war as a critical conflict that “will determine the fate of the world.”

Everything from improving logistics to more joint exercises and the placement of many more troops on active alert are measures that NATO countries are pressing ahead with, Bauer said.

The original article contains 302 words, the summary contains 198 words. Saved 34%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

But we have to assume anything could happen. Germany will provide Poland with weapons and Poland will backstab Germany for the reverse UNO.

The NATO budget is a minuscule, tiny fraction of each member’s GDP(0.3%). And it gets cheaper and more effective the more members it has. Collective defensive alliances are probably the most cost effective preventive measure a country can take.

If anything NATO has allowed for a much smaller a militarization of each member state.

That said, America definitely is overdoing it with their individual military.
