I struggle to differentiate living things by anything other than proportions. We’re all just complicated things doing stuff to make more complicated things ad infinitum.

Avoid stimulus that is harmful, seek helpful stimulus. Pain, pleasure.

How much of a stretch would it be to just assume most multicellular organisms are capable of feeling something at least approximating pain?
